Het lijsttrekkersdebat op RTL4 gevolgd? U was niet de enige, u keek samen met 1.3 miljoen mensen. Het was tevens het meest "getwitterde" onderwerp. Als debatingwedstrijd was Rutten in mijn ogen zonder meer de beste. Hij is in vorm, beheerst het spel, gelooft in zijn boodschap en in zichzelf. Hij debatteert netjes en clean.Wilders en Balkenende waren volgens mij, ieder op geheel eigen wijze, tweede. Waar Wilders uitsluitend zijn eigen achterban bediende via debatingtrucs, hit and run tactieken, was Balkenende de nette tweede. Bij Balkenende geen onder de gordel trucjes. Maar wil en kan hij volgens de kiezers echt nog een keer?
Ik ben geen geboren debater, maar Cohen bleek niet goed in dit opzicht of hij wist dat goed te verbergen. Erger nog, ik miste hem in de rol van samenbinder, die hem volgens velen goed past. Des te opmerkelijker dat Cohen in de polls als goede tweede achter Rutten eindigde, op afstand gevolgd door Wilders en Balkenende, die gelijk eindigden .... , maar .... het was dan ook geen debatingwedstrijd.
Een handige debater is niet noodzakelijk een goede leider en dat besef zal (on)bewust meespelen bij ons kiezers ... het is maar één van de eigenschappen waarover men moet beschikken, al is er ook een soort ondergrens vermoed ik. Cohen hangt in mijn ogen ongemakkelijk tegen die ondergrens aan.
Waar de overige deelnemers zich in vergisten is dat het voortdurend monomaan inbeuken op dezelfde persoon sympathie voor die persoon veroorzaakt bij de toeschouwers. Een andere (meer politieke overweging) is, dat het in ons coalitieland nadrukkelijk niet de bedoeling is dat je je opponent volledig afbrandt en vernietigt. Morgen of overmorgen doe je immers weer zaken met elkaar! Noem het fatsoen, noem het berekenend, zo doen we het al heel lang en dit besef ligt diep in onze vezels verankerd.
