Niet zo Snel, Lees eens een Boek

"Not so Fast" is de titel van een artikel van de hand van John Freeman. Een intrigerend artikel als je het mij vraagt. Auteur gaat in op de snelheid van communicatie van tegenwoordig. En betoogt, dat het wel ietsje minder kan. Altijd werd vooruitgang geassocieerd met lineaire lijnen en grafieken, die (steil) omhoog liepen. Groei (vooruitgang) is van alle tijden, maar "The ultimate form of progress, however, is learning to decide what is working and what is not; and working at this pace, emailing at this frantic rate, is pleasing very few of us." Gesteld dat onze tijd hier op aarde beperkt is en we die goed en met aandacht zouden moeten besteden. Nog een gevolg van deze snelle leefstijl volgens Freeman: "It has encouraged flotillas of unnecessary jabbering, making it difficult to tell signal from noise. It has made it more difficult to read slowly and enjoy it, hastening the already declining rates of literacy." Nog een citaat: "If the technology is to be used for the betterment of human life, we must reassert that the Internet and its virtual information space is not a world unto itself but a supplement to our existing world." Drie dingen zijn volgens hem belangrijk:

• Speed matters
• The Physical World matters
• Context matters

Snelheid is belangrijk. Te grote of hoge snelheid kan gevaarlijk, contraproductief of oncomfortabel zijn. Niet voor niets hebben we snelheidslimieten in het verkeer, en wanneer u muziek afspeelt op een hogere snelheid dan waarmee het is opgenomen, dan is het niet om aan te horen. Het gaat dus om het toepassen van de juiste snelheid, alles zo snel mogelijk doen werkt niet.
De fysieke omgeving doet er toe. Dat weten we eigenlijk allemaal wel. Face-to-face contacten zijn belangrijk. Nog even een citaat: "If we spend our eve­ning online trading short messages over Facebook with friends thousands of miles away rather than going to our local pub or park with a friend, we are effectively withdrawing from the peo­ple we could turn to for solace, humor and friendship, not to mention the places we could go to do this."
Context is belangrijk. Koppel de ideeen van 'snelheid is vooruitgang' en 'snelheid is efficiency' eens los van elkaar. "Efficiency may be good for business and governments but does not always lead to mindfulness and sustainable, rewarding relationships." Nog een laatste citaat, dat laat zien, dat auteur niet tegen internet is: "We are here for a short time on this planet, and reacting to demands on our time by simply speeding up has canceled out many of the benefits of the Internet, which is one of the most fabulous technological inventions ever conceived."
